Woe to Those at Ease in Zion

6 ^(A)“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
    and to those who feel secure on ^(B)the mountain of Samaria,
^(C)the notable men of ^(D)the first of the nations,
    to whom the house of Israel comes!
²Pass over to ^(E)Calneh, and see,
    and from there go to ^(F)Hamath the great;
    then go down to ^(G)Gath of the Philistines.
^(H)Are you better than these kingdoms?
    Or is their territory greater than your territory,
³^(I)O you who put far away the day of disaster
    ^(J)and bring near the seat of violence?

⁴“Woe to those ^(K)who lie on ^(L)beds of ivory
    ^(M)and stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
    ^(N)and calves from the midst of the stall,
⁵^(O)who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp
    and like David ^(P)invent for themselves instruments of music,
⁶^(Q)who drink wine in bowls
    and ^(R)anoint themselves with the finest oils,
    but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
⁷^(S)Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile,
    and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”

Put Not Your Trust in Princes

146 ^(A)Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
²I will praise the Lord ^(B)as long as I live;
^(C)I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

³^(D)Put not your trust in princes,
^(E)in a son of man, in whom there is ^(F)no salvation.
⁴When ^(G)his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.

⁵^(H)Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose ^(I)hope is in the Lord his God,
⁶^(J)who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
^(K)who keeps faith forever;
⁷    ^(L)who executes justice for the oppressed,
    ^(M)who gives food to the hungry.

^(N)The Lord sets the prisoners free;
⁸    ^(O)the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
^(P)The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    ^(Q)the Lord loves the righteous.
⁹^(R)The Lord watches over the sojourners;
    ^(S)he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
    but ^(T)the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

¹⁰^(U)The Lord will reign forever,
your God, O Zion, to all generations.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

¹¹But as for you, ^(A)O man of God, ^(B)flee these things. ^(C)Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. ¹²^(D)Fight the good fight of the faith. ^(E)Take hold of the eternal life ^(F)to which you were called and about which you made ^(G)the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. ¹³^(H)I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, ^(I)who in his testimony before^[a] Pontius Pilate made ^(J)the good confession, ¹⁴to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until ^(K)the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁵which he will display ^(L)at the proper time—he who is ^(M)the blessed and only Sovereign, ^(N)the King of kings and Lord of lords, ¹⁶^(O)who alone has immortality, ^(P)who dwells in ^(Q)unapproachable light, ^(R)whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

¹⁷As for the rich in ^(S)this present age, charge them ^(T)not to be haughty, nor ^(U)to set their hopes on ^(V)the uncertainty of riches, but on God, ^(W)who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. ¹⁸They are to do good, ^(X)to be rich in good works, to be generous and ^(Y)ready to share, ¹⁹thus ^(Z)storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may ^(AA)take hold of ^(AB)that which is truly life.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

¹⁹“There was a rich man who was clothed in ^(A)purple and fine linen and ^(B)who feasted sumptuously every day. ²⁰And at his gate ^(C)was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, ²¹who desired to be fed with ^(D)what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²²The poor man died and was carried by ^(E)the angels ^(F)to Abraham's side.^[a] The rich man also died and was buried, ²³and in ^(G)Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and ^(H)saw Abraham far off and Lazarus ^(I)at his side. ²⁴And he called out, ^(J)‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and ^(K)cool my tongue, for ^(L)I am in anguish in this flame.’ ²⁵But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that ^(M)you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. ²⁶And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ ²⁷And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house— ²⁸for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ ²⁹But Abraham said, ‘They have ^(N)Moses and the Prophets; ^(O)let them hear them.’ ³⁰And he said, ‘No, ^(P)father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ ³¹He said to him, ‘If they do not hear ^(Q)Moses and the Prophets, ^(R)neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”
